The Strange Story Behind Taiwan’s Alien Housing Project

The Sanzhi UFO also known as the Sanzhi pod houses or Sanzhi Pod City, were a set of abandoned and never completed pod-shaped buildings in Sanzhi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. The buildings resembled Futuro houses, some examples of which can be found elsewhere in Taiwan.

This town has one unbelievable story. The by-the-sea development of Sanzhi was supposed to be a luxury resort for the wealthy, but building stopped after strange things started to happen at the construction site. Several construction workers were killed from falling from the tops of buildings, despite having security ropes attached.

Others were crushed by cranes. Locals started to believe the ground was haunted by spirits of people who had been tortured in the Japanese death camps, which has been located there several decades before. The news spread and the work was stopped. The local government is keeping the area preserved, as it is believed destroying the buildings will release the evil spirits.

The buildings were scheduled to be torn down in late 2008, despite an online petition to retain one of the structures like a museum. Demolition work on the site began on 29 December 2008, with plans to redevelop the site into a tourist attraction with hotels and beach facilities.

By 2010, all of the UFO houses have been demolished and the site was in the process of being converted to a commercial seaside resort and waterpark.
