As the world gears up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, not only will we be cheering for the usual favorites, but we’ll also witness the debut of new sports. This summer you can expect to see two new sports: breaking and kayak cross. Here’s what you need to know about these exciting additions.
Breaking
Breaking, originally known as breakdancing, will be making a striking debut at the Paris Olympics. Born on the vibrant streets of 1970s New York, breaking emerged from the creative expressions of Black and Latino youths, quickly evolving into a global phenomenon characterized by its athletic spins, fluid movements, and artistic flair. This dance form made its preliminary Olympic appearance at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, but Paris 2024 presents its first official medal event.
Kayak Cross
Joining the Olympic canoe slalom family is the kayak cross event. In this heart-racing format, four competitors race simultaneously. This event is a test of speed, skill, and strategy. Athletes will navigate a rapid whitewater course marked by both downstream and upstream gates. Originating from the extreme sports arena, kayak cross is known for its head-to-head racing format. It is sure to bring a new level of exhilaration to the slalom events.
