2023 Oscar Nominations Are In & Here Are the Biggest Snubs and Surprises

The Academy Awards nominations have finally been unveiled, with Everything Everywhere All At Once leading the way. After months of predictions, this year’s list of nominees still featured many shockers, starting with these snubs and surprises that no one saw coming.

Surprise: Andrea Riseborough, “To Leslie”

Andrea Riseborough had one of the most unusual Oscar campaigns in recent memory, but having A-list stars promote her movie To Leslie on social media apparently did the trick.

Snub: Female Directors

After receiving constant backlash for failing to honor female directors, the Academy is under fire again this year, since only Women Talking made it to the best picture category.

Surprise: Brian Tyree Henry, “Causeway”

The Academy voters made a few interesting choices when picking nominees for the best supporting actor, and it was a surprise to see Brian Tyree Henry get a nod for Causeway.

Snub: “Babylon”

Babylon, Damien Chazelle’s star-studded ode to Hollywood, went from being one of the Academy Awards front-runners to only receiving three nominations in technical categories.

Surprise: Paul Mescal, “Aftersun”

The best actor field is pretty crowded this year, and we were pleasantly surprised to see Paul Mescal make the cut with his leading role in Aftersun.

Snub: Taylor Swift, “Carolina”

Taylor Swift’s fans hoped she’d score her first Oscar nomination for “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, but she was snubbed by the Academy in favor of Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
